The thing that baffles me the most is that, by far the biggest destroyer of the economy in the original was how abusable medbeds and resurrection chambers were. Another alternative would have been that there is no junk items, and instead we vaporise useful items into scrap (like duplicate weapons, extra grenades and so on that we don't need), which would largely maintain the players power level while allowing them to "trade" unwanted items for currency that they can then spend on things they do want.
